What are the Monster Sounds?
The IPA Phonemies Family are Speech Sound Monsters. They help even very young children understand English speech sounds as a concept that bridges spoken and written English, and they give non-speaking or minimally speaking children a character to represent phonemes they cannot, or choose not to, produce.
Children quickly grasp the idea. Just as they know a dog ‘says woof’, they understand that a Speech Sound Monster says a sound. They also easily follow the instruction ‘follow the monster sounds to say the word’ when the monsters are positioned on the speech sound lines.
